Helen Bradley (1900 - 1979)

"Good Gracious", said Dr Currie

"Good Gracious", said Dr Currie, "Have you smelled her breath?"
Father had just saddled "Fanny" to the trap when she suddenly sat down. Dr Currie was passing,
and father asked if he thought she'd got colic! but Dr Currie said he thought she was slightly tipsy!
Everyone laughed & mother, very red in the face asked George & I if we knew anything about it,
"Well mother", I said "Weve only given her a bucketful or two of Willie Murgatroyds fathers
medicine". "He had a barrel full of it in the cellar and Willie couldn't turn the tap off, so we filled
Fannys bucket with it". "Mr Murgatroyd always said it did him good, so we thought it would do
Fanny good also". "We didn't know it would make her set down". Poor mother, she said she felt
mortified especially as Miss Carter (who wore Pink) was close by talking to Mrs Currie & Mr Taylor
(the Bank Manager) and the year was 1907.
Helen Layfield Bradley 1968

Oh Where, Oh Where Can Gyp and Barney Be?

'Oh where, Oh where can Gyp and Barney be
We had all been for a lovely walk that
afternoon with the dogs romping along and enjoying themselves. but when we got
near home they were not with us. We had
our tea and they still did not come, so
aunt Mary lit the storm lantern and
took George and me with her to see if we
could find them. She asked some boys
playing in Dove St. if they had seen
two little black dogs, "No Missus
we haven't" they said, so sadly we had
to return home without them and the/year was 1906.'

The Beach at Blackpool

‘Children,’ said Father and Mother, ‘You’ve had enough donkey rides for today, Tom wants to take them home, the tide is coming in quickly’ so George and I said goodbye to our favourite donkeys and joined Grandma, the Aunts, Miss Carter (who wore pink) and Mr. Taylor (the Bank Manager), who had just arrived to walk back with Miss Carter. But Mrs. Hope-Ainsworth insisted on walking with Mr. Taylor all the way home, which made Miss Carter very cross, and the year was 1906.
