George Houston. R.S.A.(1869 – 1947)

Born Dalry , Ayrshire, George Houston was a painter in oil and watercolour landscapes especially Argyll, Loch Awe, Loch Tay and Loch Fyne. Houston served his time as a lithographic artist in Glasgow, subsequently illustrator with the Glasgow Citizen.

Widely travelled, visiting Japan in 1911. Prolific painter in both watercolour and oil with a simple and direct vision. He liked the use of vibrant blues, greens and yellows.

Note: Painted c1910. Sir Robert Lorimer commenced renovations of the Castle in 1911. Dunderave is the seat of the MacNaughtans of Argyll.
