Charles Jones was a London painter of sheep, cattle and deer in landscape settings. He was of Welsh extraction, born near Cardiff and was affectionately know as 'Sheep' Jones due to his skilful and realistic portrayal of sheep.
Jones exhibited between 1860 and 1891 at the Royal Academy and between 1861 and 1883 at the British Institution. He also exhibited at Suffolk Street and the New Watercolour Society as well as various other venues. He was a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy, Manchester and circa 1890 was awarded a gold medal at the Crystal Palace.
It is the meticulousness of Jones' work which appeals most to the contemporary imagination.
Charles Jones exhibited nine works at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, seven at the Manchester City Art Gallery, twenty four at the Roayl Society of British Artists, Birmingham, nineteen at the Royal Society of British Artists, twenty two at the Royal Cambrian Academy, fourteen at the Royal Hibernian Academy and ten at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. He also exhibited at the Dudley Gallery, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and at the Arthur Tooth & Sons Gallery.
